The first work package (WP 1) focuses on the biblical-linguistic dimension of the word, with particular emphasis on its meaning, interpretation, and its actualization in the contemporary context.
The research proceeds from the importance of the word — both literary and biblical — through which St. Jerome shaped and developed his intellectual and spiritual experience. As an outstanding intellectual and learned speaker who devoted his work to exegesis, Jerome approached Sacred Scripture in a multidisciplinary manner, drawing on various traditions and methods of interpretation.
Special attention is given to the two great exegetical schools — the Antiochene and the Alexandrian. While the Antiochene School emphasized the literal interpretation and historical context of the scriptural text, the Alexandrian School was oriented toward an allegorical and deeper symbolic understanding of the biblical word.
Building on Jerome’s approach and his efforts to deepen understanding of Sacred Scripture through the development of new methods, WP 1 explores the contemporary relevance of the biblical word and its application in modern society. Special emphasis is placed on connecting biblical themes to contemporary social circumstances, in line with conciliar guidelines, and on bringing them closer to different groups — from the professional and scientific public to the wider social context.
The aim is to show how the biblical word can still be a relevant source of understanding, dialogue, and the shaping of social values today.
