WP2 — Historical-Theological Aspects

The second work package (WP 2) focuses on the historical, theological, and cultural reception of St. Jerome, with an emphasis on the circumstances of Jerome’s “forge,” where he shaped his thought, was active, and left a strong mark on the Church, culture, and society.

The research will encompass Jerome’s intellectual and spiritual development, his anthropological thought, and his relationship to the culture and society of his time. Special attention will be devoted to how his legacy is reflected in the pastoral ministry of the word, catechesis, and preaching, as well as to its importance for educating people toward a responsible understanding and use of the word.

In this context, there is a need to educate — especially young people — not only in knowledge but also in the word itself: its meaning, responsibility, and relationship to God and to fundamental values. The goal is to explore how Jerome’s legacy can contribute to a renewed appreciation of the value of the word and encourage individuals not only to understand it but also to shape their own lives according to it.

WP 2 also examines St. Jerome’s place in Croatian cultural and national history. Special emphasis is placed on his role as a symbol of Croatian identity and on how his legacy and veneration have, throughout history, been promoted by individuals and church institutions. The historical circumstances under which Jerome became the subject of various interpretations, disputes, and conflicts will also be considered.

In this way, WP 2 seeks to connect Jerome’s thought, historical experience, and cultural legacy, and to demonstrate their relevance for understanding the word, identity, and values in contemporary society.
